Anti-Racism Community Group: Film Discussion

For this week's meeting we have decided to have everyone choose one of these three films to watch on their own. At our meeting we will then share about the one you chose to view and hear others discuss the one they watched. You are welcome to join the conversation even if you have not attended previously.

The Hate You Give
o Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighbourhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right. THE HATE U GIVE is based on the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller by Angie Thomas and stars Amandla Stenberg as Starr, with Russell Hornsby, Regina Hall, Common, Anthony Mackie and Issa Rae.

Moonlight
o Moonlight is a 2016 American coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Barry Jenkins, based on Tarell Alvin McCraney's unpublished semi-autobiographical play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. The film presents three stages in the life of the main character: his youth, adolescence, and early adult life. It explores the difficulties he faces with his sexuality and identity, including the physical and emotional abuse he endures growing up.

The Last Tree
o Femi, a young British boy of Nigerian heritage, has to adapt to the new environment of inner-city London, in this outstanding, BIFA-winning drama from Shola Amoo (A Moving Image).

Upcoming Book Discussion

At our last meeting we also decided on collectively reading "Why I'm No Longer Talking To White People About Race" by Reni Eddo-Lodge.

We will be having a discussion about the book on Wednesday 23 September 5:30 - 7:30pm

If you are not in a place financially to purchase the book please email hilary@woodlandscommunity.org.uk.

Always feel free to come along even if you haven't watched or read as it can still be a great experience to hear people talk about what they've learned.
