Anti-Racist Community Group: Talk about New Nationality and Borders Bill.

The Woodlands Anti-Racist Reflection Group will be hosting a special meeting to give space for people to talk about how they feel about these new bill, and what we, as a community, can do to resist them and support each other. Saturday 22nd Jan 10-11am on zoom.

We recognise the anxiety they are causing, especially for people of colour, and so extend particular invitation for people of colour to join the call.

More details:

On 5th January the Nationality and Borders Bill will be brought to the House of Lords. It is a hugely racist bill.

  • It will make it possible for British citizens to be stripped of their citizenship, without notice, as long as the government believes they have access to another nationality elsewhere. This could impact on anyone from an immigrant background, even if they were born in the UK and have no connections in another country.

  • It will criminalise people and deny them access to the asylum system solely on the basis of the route they travelled. This is in breach of international law

  • It will discriminate between refugees and leave the majority stuck in limbo for years, potentially segregated from the rest of society in isolated and unsanitary ‘accommodation centres’, unable to work or participate in society. People could also be flown thousands of miles away to offshore detention centres.

  • The Bill makes it more difficult for people subject to immigration control to challenge life-changing decisions taken by the Home Office. It introduces many more hurdles in what is already an incredibly dehumanising system.

The bill is being pushed through parliament at the same time as the policing bill which, if passed, would seriously curtail the right to protest.
