We will be discussing:

  1. Documentary Series. We are Black and British . Six black Britons from different backgrounds come together. Each shares a deeply personal story, raising tough questions about being black and British in search of answers..

  2. Podcast, Things Fall Apart. Episode 8 A Mock Slave Auction. An incident of racist bullying on Snapchat is currently tearing apart a small town on a lake in Michigan. As the ripples spread, practically every conflict we’ve encountered throughout our series rears its head.

  3. Documentary Short. [13mins 28]'They're teaching children to hate America': the culture war dividing US schools. Carmel, Indiana is an affluent suburb just north of Indianapolis known for its idyllic neighbourhoods, low crime rates and some of the country’s best public schools. But in early 2021, the school board brought in diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives - known as simply DEI - a program that seeks to combat structural racism in the education system. Since then, a battle has erupted between those that welcome the changes and others who see it as leftist indoctrination of their children.

Along with our more general conversations around peoples experience of racism and proposed Anti-Racist material for the group to engage with next time.

We also have a book for our group, Go Tell it on the Mountain by James Baldwin, it is available from Bookshop.org for £9.29, link here. We will discuss chapters 1-3 on April 6th.

Go Tell It on the Mountain is an emotional story that contains time gaps throughout seventy years. The novel allows its reader to peek into the minds of multiple characters; however, the story takes place during one twenty-four hour period. The book explores several controversial topics in the history of the United States, including racism in New York's Harlem and the South, poverty, and the anger that racism stimulated.

There is also the free audiobook version of the book on youtube here

Anyone is welcome to these discussions. Please let us know if you need any financial assistance in purchasing this book.

Please feel free to come along and listen even if you have not engaged with our chosen material as it can still be a great experience to hear people talk about what they've learned.
