Remembering Esther

Join us in Woodlands Community Garden for a special event to remember and celebrate our dear friend Esther Brown on her birthday weekend.

We’ll be unveiling a beautiful wooden memorial bench that will form a centrepiece in the communal area, for people to sit together for years to come connecting with nature and one another and reflect on Esther’s passion for the garden.

Please join us all welcome!

1pm Tea, coffee and cake available in garden

2pm Unveiling of memorial bench + chance to share memories

2.45pm Choral music from Women of Woodland’s Group members

3pm Close

Today’s event has been made possible by donations to our Esther Brown Memorial Fund which has now closed after raising over £9K. Thank you to everyone for your generous donations.

As well as funding the memorial bench lovingly fabricated by Boomerang Woodworking, we have Esther’s beautiful memorial stone and rockery garden. Any funds that have been donated that aren’t used for the physical memorials have been used to
- maintain and enhance Woodlands Community Garden as a place where both people and nature can flourish.
- buy food and other essential supplies to support people in need via Woodlands Community Cafe.

Esther Brown was a founding member of our community garden and her generous spirit was central to making the community garden a welcoming and inclusive place. For many years she also helped to run our community café and served on our board of charity trustees. Esther was an exceptionally kind, compassionate and caring individual who dedicated her life to helping others. Through her voluntary work she touched the lives and hearts of countless people. We miss her terribly.

Esther was murdered at the end of May 2021. We have timed this event to co-incide with her birthday weekend, and focus on the positives of her life, rather than the terrible circumstances of her death.

Esther stands in the garden behind some flowers with a flask and she wears a sunhat. It is a sunny day.
A wooden bench sits in a community garden. It has the shape of sunshine carved into it and words that read, For Esther, as much a part of this garden as the trees, plants, birds and soil.
