Woodlands Climate Action 2021 Coffee Chats - Built-In Obsolescence

There is a lot to feel nervous about these days, and while the effects of the pandemic are often in the forefront of most of our minds, many of us are simultaneously combating anxiety related to the climate crisis.

Please join us for our weekly online Climate Action 2021 Coffee Chats, where each week we will chat about a different topic relating to the climate crisis, to offer support, advice or even just a sympathetic ear as well as connect community members during these isolating times.

This week we will be discussing the concept, ramifications and injustice of built-in obsolescence in commercial electronic products. This is when devices and products are deliberately designed to fail or break prematurely to incentivise or even force us as consumers to buy the newest version of that product. This sinister and disgracefully commonplace practise is responsible for an incredible amount of ewaste and carbon emissions purely for the sake of chasing profits. We will discuss this practise, what we can do to combat and mitigate it as well as the perils from the distinct but related problems of “perceived obsolescence” i.e. buying the latest clothes/car/phone/etc simply to keep up with trends.

Please join us!

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
