Food and garden waste that is sent to landfill doesn’t harmlessly breakdown. It has a big impact on the environment as it rots and releases methane – a harmful greenhouse gas that is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. This is a big problem globally with about 1/3 of all food produced being wasted before being eaten.
Increasing our home composting is one piece of the larger picture of tackling food waste issues, even more important now given the recent suspension of the Council's food waste bin collections
As a way to support increased home composting we are piloting a new Woodlands Community Compost Project. Project participants will receive a 220 litre compost bin for their back court or garden. In return we'll ask you to participate in training about reducing food waste and hands on compost training in the Woodlands Community Garden.
