This is an opportunity to join Curator of Contemporary Art Dominic Paterson and fellow garden volunteer Rosa Cato to find out more about this exhibition at the Hunterain Art Gallery centred on the themes of Derek Jarman's work.
The visit is open to all and free of charge.
Derek Jarman (1942-1994) was an artist, filmmaker, costume and stage designer, writer, poet, gardener, and gay rights activist. Jarman was one of the very few public figures in the UK to be openly HIV-positive, having been diagnosed in 1986. His illness prompted him to establish his home at Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, Kent, where he cultivated a sculpture garden and wrote his celebrated memoir Modern Nature (part gardening journal, part autobiography). His writing, filmmaking and his approach to gardens and gardening are both inspiring and influential.
The exhibition is inspired by Jarman’s diary entries from 1989 which detail his performance-installation at Glasgow’s Third Eye Centre, describe his project for the garden at Prospect Cottage, and his work on the film The Garden. Digging in Another Time includes a collection of work by Jarman alongside new commissions by a selection of contemporary artists.
The exhibition considers art and gardening as powerful and political acts. The art works visually explore themes of sex, sexuality, the HIV and AIDS pandemic, illness and death through painting, film and mixed media.
