Waste to Wonder is a new project aiming to raise awareness about resources that, while non-renewable and therefore valuable, are normally considered and treated as waste, plastic in particular.
Through a series of workshops, we’ll explore ways to know and use these materials, giving them a new life in a creative way, using both common household appliances and purpose-built machinery.
The first step is to get familiar with the subject, and that’s what we are going to do in this introductory workshop.
We’ll provide information about different kinds of plastic, how they are manufactured, how they can be recycled and we’ll show how to tell plastic types apart using different techniques.
We’ll then sort the plastic according to type and recyclability.
Participants who are interested are encouraged to take their share of plastic home to be cleaned so that it can be recycled in the following workshops.
Joining the monthly community clean-up of our neighbourhood, we’ll collect plastic that’s been abandoned and keep it separated from other materials. As well as helping tidy up our local streets, the clean-ups are a great way to meet your neighbours and get involved in community life.
The project is done in collaboration with local organisations Plastically and Nopla, and is made possible thanks to the Small Grants for Community-led Sustainability Projects awarded by the University of Glasgow, The Glasgow Centre for Population Health and CIVIS.
The creations will be featured in a final exhibition in February 2023.
